paso superior, the climber's basecamp where i spent 2 nights in a snow cave that i dug with argentinean climbers waldo and indio, is at the base of this photo. the huge monolith of el chaltén looms behind. while i was there 2 climbers from seattle came into camp and helped me understadn what i was looking at by saying el chaltén was like taking yosemite's half dome and putting it on top of el capitan. from the little triangular patch of glacier at the center of the photo to the top of el chaltén is 5,000 feet! that's almost a mile of vertical granite wall!
